Without a doubt, the longest UEFA Champions League campaign ๐๐, but here we go!
Welcome ladies and gentlemen, to the most prestigious club football competition. We all know how the coronavirus hampered the progress of the competition, including having Round of 16 fixtures put on hold. Now that those games have finally been played, let’s have a look at what transpired.
10-11 March 2020
Before the competition halted, Atalanta put on an impressive display against Valencia in Spain and thanks to four goals from Josip Illicic in that game, the Italian team further marched on in their debut season in the Champions League. Definitely a night to never forget. This was also one of two games played behind closed doors. In the other game, Tottenham Hotspur were torn to shreds by RB Leipzig. Spurs’ defence couldn’t cope with Marcel Sabitzer, who scooped a brace for himself before Emile Forsberg finished off the London-based team later on in the second half. Last seasons’ finalists comprehensively outclassed. ๐ค๐ฅ

Nothing was more dramatic than to see last seasons’ champions, Liverpool, being outclassed by Atletico Madrid at Anfield. Liverpool took advantage of the game early on and looked to be turning the tide in the tie. However, Atletico didn’t give in and got a goal to take the game to extra-time. It was in these moments, where the dethroning of Liverpool took place. Marcos Lliorante scored the equalizer for Atletico on the night, but put the tie in the Spanish team’s favor because of the away goals’ rule. Liverpool failed to score to keep their hopes alive and Alvaro Morata ended up vanishing any more hopes for the Champions, when he slotted the ball past the Liverpool goalie. This ensured that there will be a new champion for the 2019/20 season. There was drama in France too, as Paris-Saint Germain turned their tie around against German outfit Borussia Dortmund. Brazilian star Neymar scored the Parisian’s first goal, giving them enough momentum to grab a second goal just before the first-half ended. The French team managed to control the game well, preventing any sort of threat that would come from the German side. As the final whistle blew, PSG players celebrated whilst the players from Dortmund were left with disappointment.

Chelsea took a trip to Germany to take on German titans Bayern Munich, and for sure it was an unpleasant ride ๐. Bayern were too good for the Blues, even though Chelsea scored a goal in the first-half thanks to Tammy Abraham. The goal wasn't enough though, because Bayern added to the two goals they scored in the first-half by scoring another two. Robert Lewandowski grabbed himself a brace from those 4 goals scored. Bayern showed yet again that they are favorites to lift the trophy this season. As for Chelsea, hopefully we bounce back next season ๐ . In the other game, Barcelona defeated Napoli in Spain to book themselves a place in the last 8 for a 13th consecutive season. Napoli had an early chance to score but unfortunately, Dries Mertens struck the post as he didn't get the best connection of the ball onto his foot. Clement Lenglet headed Barca's first, followed by a brilliant Lionel Messi goal ๐ฅ๐๐ฝ and Luis Suarez scoring from the penalty spot in first-half stoppage time. Messi did actually score another goal but his hand was invovled in the build-up to the goal and therefore VAR ruled it as handball. Napoli also scored from a penalty in first-half stoppage time. They had chances in the second-half but were unable to convert them.
After about five months without football, the competition managed to resume this weekend (well on Friday then yesterday), and the teams took to the pitch to finish off their second leg ties. Lyon were defeated by Juventus but stunned them yet again as they won via the away goals rule. Memphis Depay converted the first goal of the game from the penalty spot, giving his team what looked like the lifeline. Quite an arguable decision for that penalty though ๐คจ. However, none other than Cristiano Ronaldo knocked hard on the French team's door, as the 35 year old converted a penalty for Juventus and produced a moment of pure quality when he struck the ball with his left boot outside the penalty area ๐ฅ๐๐ฝ. It's like he's not ageing ๐๐ฑ. He almost scored another goal from a free-kick in the first-half and from a corner-kick in the second-half. By how much the efforts came, Juventus couldn't get through the Lyon defense and the French team held on to make it to the last 8. Maurizio Sarri, the manager of Juventus at the time, lost his job 24 hours hours later. In the other game on the night, Manchester City capitalized from a pair of errors made by Real Madrid defender Raph Varane. Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus with those goals. Karim Benzema had equalized before Jesus' goal though. It was the first time Zinedine Zidane had lost back to back knockout games.
