Hello folks!
I'm back again with some news, this time about the UEFA Champions League Positional Awards. What are these awards for you ask, well, let me break that down for you guys ๐.
Purpose of awards
So UEFA used to only have a single award to recognize the best player in Europe, which was just the UEFA Player of the Year. By now having positional awards, it makes the system much fairer than before. Now there will be the best player for each position on the pitch. These awards were introduced in the 2016/17 season.
Date of awards and venue
The UEFA Champions League Positional Awards for the 2019/20 season ceremony will be held on October 1 - the same date as the 2020/21 group stage draw- and will also hold the ceremony for UEFA Men's Player of the Year and UEFA Women's Player of the Year. This will all be done in Nyon, Switzerland.
The Nominees
The following players were selected as nominees for the UEFA Champions League Positional Awards:
Goalkeepers
- Keylor Navas (Paris Saint-Germain)
- Manuel Neurer (Bayern Munich)
- Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid)
Defenders
- David Alaba (Bayern Munich)
- Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich)
- Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich)
Midfielders
- Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)
- Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)
- Thiago Alcantara (Bayern Munich)
Forwards
- Robert Lewandwoski (Bayern Munich)
- Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)
- Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain)
Wondering how these lists were made?
The voting was done by 32 coaches from the teams that took part in the 2019/20 season, and by 55 journalists selected from the European Sports Media group (ESM), with one from every UEFA member association. Coaches were not allowed to select a player from their own team.
The members of this voting jury chose their top 3 players for each position, with first place earning 5 points, second place earning 3 points and third place earning 1 point. The 3 players that received the most points for each position made up the final shortlist.
Last season
The winners for the previous season, 2018/19, were as follows:
Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker
Defender: Virgil Van Dijk
Midfielder: Frenkie De Jong
Forward: Lionel Messi
