UEFA Champions League: Group Stage Matchday 1 Results

 Matchday 1 ⚽️๐Ÿ†

Hello everybody! Welcome back to the blog. Felt like ages since I’ve been here but I'm back for the new 2021/22 season ⚽️. Time to get the blog going for this new season. Let’s get to it ๐Ÿ’ฅ⚽️

Tuesday, 14 September 2021

BSC Young Boys vs Manchester United

RESULT: 2-1

Young Boys goals: Moumi Ngamaleu 66’, Theoson Siebatchsu 90 +5’

Man United goals: Cristiano Ronaldo 13’

Man United red cards: Aaron Wan-Bissaka 35’

Man United started their campaign on an embarrassing note, by falling short to Swiss champions, BSC Young Boys. Despite having Legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, back to the club, the team still lost. Ronaldo made a sensational comeback as he opened the scoring, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka would be sent off later in the half for a reckless tackle. Young Boys took advantage and not only equalized, but scored in stoppage time after latching onto a howling Jesse Lingard back pass.

Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

RESULT: 0-3

Bayern goals: Thomas Muller 34’, Robert Lewandowski 56’, 85’

If you watched this game last year, you know exactly what vibes were present ๐Ÿ˜‚. Bayern outclassed Barรงa once again. Thomas Muller’s deflected shot was the first goal, until Robert Lewandowski finished off the Catalans in the second-half with carbon-copy rebounded goals. And this was a Barcelona with no Lionel Messi.

Villarreal vs Atalanta

RESULT: 2-2

Villarreal goals: Manu Trigueros 39’, Arnaut Danjuma 73’

Atalanta goals: Remo Freuler 6’, Robin Gosens 83’

Villarreal red cards: Francis Coquelin 84’

A rather engaging game played out in this one. Atalanta took the lead from a wildly deflected Remo Freuler shot. Manu Trigueros equalized towards the end of the first-half. Arnaut Danjuma would put Villarreal in the lead of the game but Robin Gosens leveled matters 10 minutes later to keep the a game a stalemate. Francis Coquelin received a second yellow card and the Spanish team finished the game with 10 men.

Manchester City vs RB Leipzig

RESULT: 6-3

Man City goals: Nathan Ake 16’, Nordi Mukiele 28’ (OG), Riyad Mahrez 45 +2 (P)’, Jack Grealish 56’, Joao Cancelo 75’, Gabriel Jesus 85’

Leipzig goals: Christopher Nkunku 42’, 51’, 73’

Leipzig red cards: Angelino 79’

Arguably, the pick of the bunch. This game was insane, and its only the beginning ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜‚. Man City were in the driving seat by half-time, with goals from Nathan Ake, an own goal by Nordi Mukiele, a Riyad Mahrez penalty and Christopher Nkunku pulling one back for Leipzig. Nkunku completed his hat-trick in the second-half but it wasn’t enough as Man City got 3 goals through Jack Grealish, Joao Cancelo and Gabriel Jesus. It was a glittering display of attacking football from both teams. Leipzig finished the game with 10 men.

Liverpool vs AC Milan

RESULT: 3-2

Liverpool goals: Trent Alexander-Arnold 9’, Mohamed Salah 48’, Jordan Henderson 69’

Milan goals: Ante Rebic 42’, Brahim Diaz 44'

Another incredible game, with this one having vibes from the 2005 Champions League final where Liverpool came back from behind and eventually won via penlaty shoot-out. Liverpool scored early in the first-half but Milan scored 2 goals in no time towards the end of the half. Liverpool would eventually get back into the game through Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson completed the historic comeback for the Reds, with a well-timed half-volley.

Sporting Lisbon vs Ajax

RESULT: 1-5

Sporting goals: Paulinho 33'

Ajax goals: Sรฉbastien Haller 2', 9', 51', 63', Steven Berghuis 39'

A Sรฉbastien Haller masterclass tore Sporting Lisbon to shreads as the Ivorian international hit the Portuguese team with 4 goals by his own. Steven Berghuis nipped in a goal of his own within the first-half. Sporting Lisbon's consolation only managed to come via a squeezed shot from Paulinho in the first-half as well.

The rest of the results were as follows:
